How does Coolsculpting® work?

Coolsculpting® selectively damages fat cells using the controlled application of cold to localized areas of the body containing excess fat. Once damaged, the fat cells are eliminated by the body's normal inflammatory response. Am I a candidate?

Good candidates for Coolsculpting® have localized bulges of fat on the abdomen, flanks (love handles), back, chest, thighs, or arms. Coolsculpting® by Zeltiq should not be viewed as a treatment for weight loss or obesity.

How well does it work?

How is Coolsculpting® done?

Coolsculpting® by Zeltiq involves applying a cooling unit, which consists of two cooling plates connected to a vacuum and cooling source, to a discrete bulge of fat. When activated, the vacuum will draw the fat bulge up into the cooling unit, between the two cooling plates, and cool the tissue to a temperature close to freezing for about one hour. The cooling unit is then removed and the treated area is massaged to maximize fat cell damage. Over 1-4 months, the damaged fat cells are removed by the body's normal inflammatory response.

What does it feel like?

Patients can feel the suction and the cold of the cooling unit. If there is discomfort, it tends to occur during the first 10 minutes of the procedure and tends to be mild. After the procedure there can be mild redness and bruising.

How will I feel afterwards?

Discomfort, bruising, and sensation change can occur early after the procedure. If these symptoms occur they tend to be mild and generally resolve over the first two weeks.
