If you have 75-100 pounds or more to lose, Sleeve Gastrectomy may be an ideal option. The Sleeve Gastrectomy operation involves substantially reducing the size of the stomach, from approximately 30-40 ounces to 3-4 ounces. This will enable you to eat less, feel satisfied, and lose weight.

How to choose - Sleeve Gastrectomy, LAP-BAND®, or Gastric Bypass »
Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery is growing quickly in popularity in the United States and throughout the world for three reasons: it results in
generally excellent weight loss, it is considered less invasive than Gastric Bypass, and patients like it.
The Sleeve Gastrectomy operation involves laparoscopically removing a large portion of the stomach as shown in the diagram. The stomach is made to be a narrow long tube,
like a garden hose. The resulting small volume stomach (about 3-4 ounces) will help you to eat much smaller portions of food, feel satisfied, and lose weight.
Our goals are patient safety, great surgical outcomes, and superior weight loss results.
Achieving superior Sleeve Gastrectomy surgical outcomes (low complication rates) requires an experienced and proven surgeon, and an appropriate surgical facility.
Our Orange County Sleeve Gastrectomy Program has these components (not all do), and our record of superior patient outcomes reflects this.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery typically takes 1-2 hours. General anesthesia is necessary and usually five incisions are require. Patients generally are discharged from the hospital 1-2 days after surgery.
Patients generally recover quickly after surgery. Usually pain is mild and resolves over the first week. Patients usually go back to work within 2-3 weeks.
Follow-up appointments are scheduled frequently during the first year after Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery (1 week, 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months). After 1 year we generally see patients at 6 month to 1 year intervals.
Weight loss success after Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery requires a well-performed operation and appropriate eating/exercise habits.

About choosing the right program »
The good published studies show that Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery results in substantial weight loss (average 60-80% of excess weight loss). It is important to understand that weight loss outcomes are determined by the quality of the operation and patients' eating and exercise habits after surgery. Because of this, choice of surgeon and program is important.

Many medical problems are associated with weight. Examples include diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, joint pain and arthritis, heartburn, asthma, depression, infertility, urinary stress incontinence, lower extremity swelling and headaches. Published studies show that weight related medical problems tend to either resolve or improve with weight loss after Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery.
Like with all surgery, there is the potential for complications to occur after Sleeve Gastrectomy. Also like with all surgery, complication rates are related to surgeon skill and experience. With Gastric Sleeve Surgery in particular, meticulous surgical technique and attention to the small details are mandatory to minimize the risk for complications like leak. For this reason it is important to choose a qualified, experienced, and proven bariatric surgeon.
Complication rates from five recent published studies are shown in the table below:
| Complication | % Patients |
| Mortality | 0.39% |
| Pulmonary Embolism | <1% |
| Leak | 0.8-1.8% |
| Nausea/Reflux | 3-15% |
| Bleeding | 1.4-2.5% |
| Readmission | 2-4% |
There have been multiple published studies (including the highly regarded Swedish Obesity Study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in August 2007) showing decreased long-term mortality in patients who have undergone weight loss surgery. This is because medical conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and high blood pressure tend to resolve or improve with weight loss after surgery.
