Remember, the weight loss results discussed on this page are averages - individual patients can lose more or less weight than the average (see section below).
Excess weight is the amount of weight over ideal weight. Ideal weights are published in the Metropolitan Life Insurance height-weight tables. These tables display weight ranges for small, medium, and large frame sizes. Ideal weight is considered to be the middle weight in the medium frame size range. To calculate the percentage of excess weight loss (%EWL) divide weight lost by maximum excess weight and multiply by 100. The tables include one inch of height for shoes, so one inch needs to be added to actual height to see the correct weight range.
Weight loss after Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery typically occurs rapidly over the first 1-2 years after surgery. Studies show that the average patient initially loses a substantial amount of weight (average 60-70% EWL). Long-term weight loss results (3+ years), however, show more variability, with some patients maintaining weight loss and some patients regaining at least some weight.
It is important to understand that ultimately the Gastric Sleeve operation is only a tool to help patients manage their weight. The Gastric Sleeve operation helps patients to eat less and feel satisfied, but it doesn't make patients have good eating habits. Long-term weight loss success requires patients to establish and maintain good eating habits after surgery.
Our Orange County Sleeve Gastrectomy Program focuses on education, follow-up, and support to better help our patients establish the habits that will enable long-term weight loss success after surgery. The result of this focus has been excellent weight loss results as described above.
