Hi, I'm Kim! I'm 42 years old and so happy that I got the LAP-BAND® procedure, after 11 years of struggling with my weight. I would always lose and then gain back more than I lost. Prior to surgery I appeared happy on the outside, but was unhappy on the inside because of how I looked and felt. I used food to feed that unhappiness. At size 28 it was easy to look harshly at myself and not like what I saw.

My personal health was the BIG driver in my having Weight Loss Surgery. I've had several MI's (heart attacks), a triple bypass, some stents and a pacemaker with defibrillator implanted. So, at 347 pounds, I had a choice, loss weight or die.

Ever since I can remember, I have always been overweight. By high school graduation, I was hitting 190 lbs. At my heaviest, right before surgery, I was an obese person at 226 lbs. After numerous diet failures, I knew that weight loss surgery was my only option. I was going to soon turn 30 years old and did not want to live my life as an obese individual.
I liked the fact that the LAP-BAND® was less invasive and had lower rates of complications than the traditional gastric bypass surgery. I also liked the fact that the surgery was reversible and required only an overnight hospital stay.
My surgery took place during December of 2002 and to date, I have lost 65 lbs. I was home recuperating the day after surgery and was able to go back to work within 10 days. I went from a size 18 (I'm only 5'2" tall!) to a size 8. My goal was to lose between 80-90 lbs and I hope to achieve that goal this year. The surgery has taught me about portion control, choosing the right kinds (healthier) food, and leading a more healthy and active lifestyle. Choosing to undergo the LAP-BAND® procedure was the best decision I could have made in my life and I am thrilled with the results so far. Thanks to Dr. Oliak and the Obesity Center, I am much happier, active, and most importantly a healthier person.
