If you have 75-100 pounds or more to lose, Gastric Bypass may be an ideal option. The Gastric Bypass operation involves surgically reducing the size of the stomach to approximately the size of a thumb. This will help you to eat less, feel satisfied, and lose weight.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery is regarded as the "gold standard" weight loss operation
because it is considered safe (in the hands of a qualified & experienced surgeon), has been in use for more than 30 years, and has been proven to be highly effective for weight loss.
Gastric Bypass Surgery involves constructing a very small stomach pouch (about 1 ounce) and making a connection between the small stomach pouch and the intestine using
a Roux-en-Y limb of intestine (see diagram). Weight loss occurs because the small stomach pouch and connection helps patients to eat much smaller portions of food.
Our goals are patient safety, great surgical outcomes, and superior weight loss results.
Performing a technically excellent Gastric Bypass operation is necessary to minimize risk and achieve superior long-term weight loss outcomes.
Doing this requires experience, close attention to detail, and meticulous surgical technique.
Our long record of superior patient outcomes demonstrates our ability to perform excellent Gastric Bypass operations.

Candidates for Gastric Bypass Surgery are generally at least 75-100 pounds overweight (BMI 35 or greater) and have tried and failed to lose weight and keep it off numerous times. What is my BMI? »
Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery typically takes 1-2 hours. General anesthesia is necessary and usually five incisions are required. Patients generally are discharged from the hospital 2 days after surgery.
Patients generally recover quickly after surgery. Usually pain is mild and resolves over the first week. Patients usually go back to work within 2-4 weeks.
Follow-up appointments are scheduled frequently during the first year after Gastric Bypass Surgery (1 week, 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months). After 1 year we generally see patients at 6 month to 1 year intervals.
Permanent weight loss success after Gastric Bypass Surgery requires patients to maintain good eating habits and control of nonhunger (emotional) eating. The Gastric Bypass operation will help you to control your hunger with much smaller portions of food. The operation will not make you have good eating habits or control emotional eating - this part is up to you.
Our Orange County Gastric Bypass Program focuses on education, follow-up, and support to better help our patients establish the habits that will enable long-term weight loss success after Gastric Bypass Surgery. The result of this focus has been industry-leading Gastric Bypass weight loss results.
Our Support Program helps patients to make and maintain the changes that will enable ongoing weight loss success after surgery.
Many studies have been published describing weight loss results after Gastric Bypass Surgery. Studies show that surgery results in substantial weight loss (average 70-75% of excess weight loss) in the majority of patients, and that patients tend to maintain most of their weight loss over time. For more information on weight loss outcomes after surgery, and to see our weight loss outcomes, see our Gastric Bypass outcomes page.
It is important to understand, however, that long-term weight loss outcomes after Gastric Bypass Surgery are highly dependent on patients' eating and exercise habits.

Many medical problems are associated with weight. Examples include diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, joint pain and arthritis, heartburn, asthma, depression, infertility, urinary stress incontinence, lower extremity swelling and headaches. Published studies show that all weight related medical problems tend to either resolve or improve with weight loss after Gastric Bypass Surgery.
Gastric Bypass Surgery has an especially impressive effect on Type 2 Diabetes. Usually blood sugars normalize within days of surgery, allowing patients
to stop their diabetes medications before they are discharged from the hospital. Click below to watch an informative 60 Minutes segment on Gastric Bypass Surgery and diabetes.

Gastric Bypass Surgery is major surgery with the potential for complications. For a more complete discussion about potential complications after surgery, and to see our complication rates, see our Gastric Bypass outcomes page.
It is important to understand that complication rates are related to surgeon skill and experience. Some surgeons report much higher complication rates than other surgeons. With Gastric Bypass Surgery in particular, meticulous surgical technique and attention to the small details are important to minimize complications.
There have been multiple published studies (including the highly regarded Swedish Obesity Study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in August 2007) showing decreased long-term mortality in patients who have undergone weight loss surgery. This is because dangerous medical conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and high blood pressure tend to resolve or improve with weight loss after surgery.
Making the decision to have weight loss surgery was one of the most difficult decisions I have ever contemplated. It was also the best decision I could possibly have made. I researched several doctors and several surgery options before I decided to attend Dr. Oliak's seminar.
After 16 months I am literally in the best shape of my life. Weight loss surgery has been the tool I was seeking for years. Food no longer is controlling me. My wife and kids can hardly believe the changes. The surgery not only helped me, but has made our family healthier. Gastric bypass didn’t just save my life; it gave me a better one.
