David Oliak, MD
Dr. Oliak is a board certified, fellowship trained, ASMBS Center of Excellence bariatric surgeon who is an established leader in the field with a long record of excellent surgical outcomes and weight loss results. Dr. Oliak performs LAP-BAND® Surgery, Gastric Sleeve Surgery, and Gastric Bypass Surgery in Orange County, California.
Dr. Oliak attended college at prestigious Northwestern University, where he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering. He then attended one of the top-ranked medical schools in the country, Washington University in St. Louis, for his medical degree. After medical school he completed a six year General Surgery residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, followed by a one year fellowship in laparoscopic and bariatric surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey.
After fellowship training, Dr. Oliak went into practice as a laparoscopic weight loss surgeon in Los Angeles and Orange County, California. Dr. Oliak's primary goal has always been to achieve great outcomes for his patients. He has achieved postoperative complication rates that are lower than the published benchmarks by always focusing on maximizing patient safety and meticulous surgical technique. Since 2002 Dr. Oliak has performed more than 2000 laparoscopic bariatric operations (>1000 LAP-BAND®, >1000 Gastric Bypass). Dr. Oliak publishes his LAP-BAND® outcomes and his Gastric Bypass outcomes on this website. Dr. Oliak's Sleeve Gastrectomy outcomes page is currently under development.
Dr. Oliak has had an ongoing research interest in patient outcomes after weight loss surgery. He has completed numerous research studies in this area, including studies on the learning curve for laparoscopic weight loss surgery and the safety of laparoscopic weight loss surgery for higher BMI patients. He has published his research in numerous scientific journals and has presented his data at national and international surgical meetings.
Dr. Oliak's current research studies include a study on LAP-BAND® port implantation techniques to minimize complications, and a study on patient follow-up and support techniques that result in better weight loss outcomes after LAP-BAND® surgery.
Dr. Oliak's experience, excellent surgical outcomes, and excellent weight loss results have established him as a leading bariatric surgeon in the field. He is an Allergan LAP-BAND® instructor for LAP-BAND® surgeons nationwide. He has appeared on national television shows, including The View and The Tyra Banks Show. He is an active contributor to the knowledge base of the field through research, and an advocate for accountability for outcomes (complication rates and weight loss results) after surgery.
